Maritime Greenwich

Maritime Greenwich, a World Heritage Site, offers visitors something really distinctive. It boasts a series of spectacular Baroque riverfront buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren along with some of the city's most charming parkland and unique maritime heritage, all set in wonderful Georgian streets.

One of the best ways to reach Greenwich is on the River Thames as you begin to see how London’s maritime history played such an important part in the history of this city. There are numerous museums, including the National Maritime Museum which is free to visit, year-round events and a chance to hunt for collectibles in Greenwich Market.

Did you know?

Henry VIII was born in Maritime Greenwich and the town will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the monarch's accession to the throne in June.  A great sportsman and lover of hunting, Henry stocked Greenwich Park with deer in 1514 and their descendants are still there today; they wandered free until 1927 but are now kept in a large enclosure. In January 1536 he was thrown from his horse while jousting in Greenwich and remained unconscious for two hours. He never jousted again.
